Psalm 18:1... I love you, O Lord, my strength...
Love is not always unconditional. There is an unconditional love of God, and we are to possess that as well, but there is love that is conditional. God has conditional love. Christ says in John 14:21, IF you love me, my father will love you, and so will I. We must love him if we expect to receive his conditional love.
That was said to help us understand this verse and chapter. Here we see that David loves God. It was with a conditional love in mind that this is written and the subsequent verses are the reason that David loved him. He had been rescued from harm. Saul and his men were pursuing him and he was highly out mane and should have been overtaken. We love and praise God for what he does. The NT says that one who has been forgiven much loves much... a conditional love again.
K and A, I want your love for God to grow and grow. This will happen when you begin to see how much he has done for you. When you recognize his unconditional love and honor him for it (obeying his words and commands) you will develop a love for him that will trigger his conditional love for you and you will want to love him even more. ~Dad
